Here's an honest critique of the 5 "best" movies and games of the day.

Entries thread: https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1534025

Authors: PringusMcDingus @EddyFaulkner @Fiddleing @AllisonDZ @BifBurpBark

1st: 2/3

Based on Sonic 06: Found out this is a clip animated from a Lythero video, which is linked in the YouTube upload.

And it turns out the YouTube version includes more clips.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sqGEQlMPS8

Still looks like a lot of work went into this and the other Lythero clips. Shame only one of them made it here whilst YouTube got the lot. Talk about foreign power!

2nd: 3/3

So a big Godzilla-esque monster burns through a city, bites off and eats its own arm, and then all of a sudden, starts promoting champagne?

Very weird and experimental, and I like it!

3rd: 2/3

Nice monochromatic style and tile graphics, the focus is on exploration, or in other words, a lot of walking around.

There's a lot of content, however part of the intro is unskippable, and according to some reviewers, inventory items can be hard to find. Some weren't able to save their progress, as the feature reportedly doesn't work.

Funny how this is supposed to be a 2-bit (4 shades of grey) when there are some objects that are green (ie. adding extra colours)

4th: 0/3

I count nine. Nine unique frames. Ah ah ah!

iu_1188233_8157415.png

That being said, if you the author are reading this, I'm aware it might be your first time creating a cartoon, but I'm sorry, there just isn't that much substance given its size, even as a 20s short. Feels more like a motion comic than an animation.

But don't feel bad, there's still so much to learn, and learning can be fun!

5th: 3/3

I think it's very wholesome and well-written, though the characters are literal puppets. Shame it's only at 3.4 stars.

Overall, we're in a bit of a drought today, half of them are from newcomers, but what what we do have can still be enjoyed. Stay tuned for tomorrow's best!

Total Score: 10/15 (65%)

Here's an honest critique of the 5 "best" movies of the day.

Entries thread: https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1533998

Authors: @binejyeah @KokoroHatsaru @Indigo-Bluez @DungeonSoup teemovsall

1st: 3/3

Basically you have a large Johnny Bravo-style dude with a big mouth. The rough character animation and use of digitally altered backgrounds can be considered part of the style, and I like it.

It's a very well-written, albeit overdue Easter parody. Looks trippy!

2nd: 1/3

This is a trailer for an upcoming manga series, however this trailer is animated (about 20 seconds).

For anime/manga standards, it does look a bit crud, not quite on the same level as artists like bluethebone, rtil, or AetherionArt. That's not to say anime styles aren't harder than other styles.

Most notably, I can still detect aliasing with that bodyshot 4 seconds in, even through the VHS filter, and the hands could also use some improvement:

As a standalone movie, can't go any higher. Otherwise I believe this will shape up into something awesome.

3rd: 3/3

Original 3D animated short. Great voices, looks very mid-to-late 2000s-ish, and there's an interesting plot twist:

Note: Not all the contributors: (there are several) are on NG.

4th: 3/3

Original series about gnomes. Very well animated.

5th: 0/3

Boobs. Beach. Bullshit. There's only one B to rule them all!

Overall, a lot of great original content, and one upcoming project to look forward to.

Entries thread: https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1533969

Authors: @POSTBOY @NoodleDood12 @BSMattW @ComixGuy927 @AlexEmery

1st: 2/3

This is another one of those "5 Second Day" animation on the #1 spot: Sounds a bit misleading when both animations are around 1 minute long.

As a #1 entry, it looks kinda rough, but still enjoyable. I like how the violinist is completely oblivious to the big giga-monster-alien-robot fight in the background.

2nd: 1/3

Another Gwimbly animation: Despite this 15 second short looking very professional, Putting him in a Smash Bros introduction feels very "obvious", given the popularity of the new Smiling Friends character.

3rd: 3/3

This is a 10 minute long episode of an old series called Bonus Stage, made to celebrate its 20+ years of existence.

The animation has evolved quite a lot since 2003, and aside from some minor audio mixing (namely the music being too loud), this seems to be very well-made.

Arguably should've been MUCH higher on the list:

4th: 1/3

It's ok, but as a Daily Pick, not that great. The voice is a bit monotone, the animation style, though still appealing, is a bit basic given its length (~10 seconds), and the entire premise is that yes, the cake IS made of rocks.

5th: 2/3

A very experimental music video for something called "Doogality". The music is great. I love the whole concept, especially the atmosphere in the first half, but the second half is just a pan of a single background, making it look padded.

Honorable Mention: UberFisch

This is a neat arcade-style game that plays a bit like Asteroids. Great music, but the shooting a bit bland: You can just hold down the fire key without consequences.

Overall, despite the scores, this lineup is still mostly enjoyable. Ultimately, giving a perfect score to an awesome movie means nothing if you also give the same score to an arguably smaller or lesser movie. Lower scores don't automatically mean it's bad, otherwise, what's the point of ranking them at all?

It's Day 20 and today's looking very good, hopefully this streak continues!

1st: 3/3

Great stop-motion/3D aesthetic. It's not every day you see an original film of this caliber take the #1 spot.

2nd: 1/3

Slow down! This is the third Pebbles animation I've reviewed in just under 3 weeks. These always seem quick to get out the door, but are at least entertaining enough to not warrant a complete zero.

3rd: 3/3

I saw this one prior to the awards. it's a great spoof of the 'bitchy thots you see on the internet', and I love the aesthetic, though it can be choppy.

4th: 3/3

A bit minimalistic, but very well-made and worth a watch!

5th: 2/3

This plays a lot like Hotel Mario, the graphics are really good, but seems tough to get used to. Kinda wish the screen was bigger or is adjustable.

Overall, mostly bangers.

Total Score: 12/15

#4, #1, #3, #5, in that order:

1st: 2/3

This seems to be an intro of some sort. Very well animated, despite its very short length (including 5 seconds of nothing).

Congrats on your first solo win (not counting collabs), and I hope this becomes a full series.

2nd: 2/3

Winners don't do drugs, only those who get silver.

Nice use of 3D environments with 2D anime-esque characters.

3rd: 3/3

IDK if this is supposed to be for Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, or Halloween, it's still perfect for the rest of the year.

Love the sheer creativity and atmosphere, in a goofy-disgusting way.

4th: 1/3

19 seconds long, though it seems a bit cringe compared to the other two shorts up here. Reminds a bit too much like FNF, so it could be that.

5th: (3/3)

A nice motion graphic tribute to the long-running Zelda games. Love all the artwork. It does say up to 2022, so no Tears of the Kingdom.

Honorable Mention: Power of Resurrection

I thought this would reach the Daily Picks already, but after 3 days it seems like it didn't. This is a new installment of the popular Tales of Alethrion series that started in 2013. Hard to miss when it's being shown on the big banner.

Overall, a really good lineup. A tad short, but still something for everyone.

Total Score: 11/15

Best/Favourite:

#3, #1, #5, in that order.

From now on: I'm going to be moving these frogreviews here: It's about time. I don't like flooding these, but I'll give it a go:

Entries thread: https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1533885

Authors: @irezoomie @PukeBomb @10OutOf10Media @ITZmarz @ShelvingMishaps

1st: 3/3

It's a bit pixelated, but it's really fun and well-animated, and a bit trippy at times. Not pixel art, but still a neat aesthetic:

2nd: 2/3

It's a Mario parody. Crude everything, but in a good way: Someone get Adult Swim!

3rd: 3/3

Great voices, very funny.

Animation takes a backseat in favour of writing/jokes, but it's the author's first win, so I'll be nice:

4th: 2/3

Cons: it's short (9 seconds), however this is still the author's first win, so I'll be nice.

It's very interesting and it's animated well (frame by frame).

5th: (3/3)

Very simplistic style. I won't ruin any jokes, but I will tell it's worth a watch

Today's some jolly old fun! Nice to see a good healthy mix of original and parody. One of the best days I've seen!

Total Score: 13/15

Best/Favourite:

All 5, in order: 1, 3, 2, 5, 4.

Ahoy hoy!

On April 16th 2023, just a bit under a year ago, I started the Dipthong project as A+B, (me + @BeepBoxClock) and released our debut album, the original Dipthong.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFq_kmjrYsw

Since then, we've had quite a few problems with it.

  1. We used covers of songs by Britney Spears, Finger Eleven, and Eiffel 65, and we failed to renew (or even acquire) the license to them, so we cannot put them all onto Newgrounds
  2. Next: we only had 1 full week to put the album together, B had a few disagreements over the tracklist, only 4 out of 9 songs was a B track.
  3. BeepBoxClock wouldn't shut the fuck up about Taylor Swift.

To make everyone happy, I've let BeepBoxClock re-record the album in instrumental form. No fancy samples, no unlicensed covers and remixes, just pure BeepBox goodness.

You can download the album here on Bandcamp! BeepBox URLs are included in the download

The first song is on Newgrounds: The rest will be published on Newgrounds one by one.

And now, some other projects:

A Sine of Relief

This is still going. Though we have a dozen submissions already, there's still one month left.

Join here!

ORIGINAL POST

Dipthong 3

I'd like to announce that I am officially working on the third installment of the Dipthong series.

So far, I've planned 18 tracks that total approximately 1 hour. I'll reveal more about it later.

That's all folks!

After writing this post speaking out against Koikatsu Party (NSFW), I STILL keep seeing this opinion that Newgrounds hates 3D art and that the site is hypocritical with their stances, primarily from 'artists' who use SFM or Koikatsu or similar (a good chunk of them NSFW). Just search "newgrounds 3d" on Twitter and search each post by date and you'll find them.

If you are or know someone who's one of "those guys" who still think Newgrounds is wrong for taking down their 3D stuff, please refer to this page or share it on Twitter if you can. This is why I've written this FAQ.

Does Newgrounds hate 3D work?

A. No! They have their own official category in the Art Portal. Here are some brilliant 3D artists featured on this site: jumpbreak96, Avovet, Crisppyboat, NoodleDood12, ZayJax, Potatoman, or just search the Featured section under "3D Art". Most people don't specifically filter 3D art, or only ever check NSFW art, so it's really easy to miss.

Why are they so strict with 3D art? They seem to have some bias against it!

A. You are taking one or more 3D character models you've found online or some other 3rd party source, you're posing it inside a 3D scene, also taken elsewhere, and the only thing you've added yourself is that you've posed them a certain way and you've tweaked the lighting. That's it! Doesn't take much work. At most, you give yourself 10-20 minutes to make your own changes to the model (like with Koikatsu Party, where a "custom" model can be sized up and given different clothing)

The 2D equivalent would be to take an existing image (or worst, an existing artpiece) and trace over it. Tracing is heavily frowned upon within the art community, so why does it seem like this isn't?. In most cases, you're losing out on essential fundamentals, including but not limited to anatomy, composition, and stylization. Look at the above 3D artists (see the first question) and then look at your own shit. Is there anything missing?

I'm pretty sure the only bias you could actually detect is that I don't know a thing about 3D. At best I had a small low-poly stint with Blender that I never post here, but that's about it!

Are they "antagonistic" towards people who "can't completely create their own 3D assets"?

A. Let me put it to you in a different way. "People who can't create their own assets" in other words just means "people who are talentless with 3D art", not necessarily 3D animation or rigging.

From what I know, there do exist jobs in the 3D animation industry that mainly involve setting up and animating rigs given to you by different members of the studio, not necessarily requiring your own modelling skills. Similar to how in 2D animation, there are different jobs for rough animation, cleanup, and in-betweens, or for rigging and animating like in 3D, though you might not need all of them to hold a job, but you don't see people complaining about how they can't upload the Johnny Test rig in their works, or their storyboards.

But when it comes to creating 3D ART, where people are judging you based on artistic merit, it's best to have an all-around set of skills necessary to create the entire thing from start to finish, not just excel in one specific skill and suck at the rest. This ESPECIALLY includes 3D modelling and texturing, as that's where most of the "style" comes from. If you're not able to show any of those skills from scratch, you're probably not a good 3D artist, you're just playing around with fancy toys!

Why is my 3rd party stuff bad when they've allowed SPRITE MOVIES on NG for 20+ years?

A. Sprite movies, or movies that borrow Krinkels' Madness Combat assets, etc, fall under Movie Guidelines, where they're fairly loose with 3rd party assets, only taking down shit if it's low-effort shovelware or gameplay clips, so they are allowed within reason.

But these are NOT the same rules as with the Art Portal, which follow Art Guidelines.

Here, you pretty much have to put in the skill and effort to model the entire thing yourself, not just pose it and tweak the lighting.

Your piece WILL be removed if you primarily rely on borrowed 3D models or you use programs such as Koikatsu and MetaHuman, which are explicitly banned for being classified as "scene creators".

If you can't model for shit, stay away from the Art Portal.

There are whole sections tagged "koikatsu" or "sfm". Why should I suffer when these others haven't?

A. No, those are not part of a site-endorsed "section", those are just different submissions tagged with "koikatsu" or "sfm". Anyone can set those tags, and usually it means they're the first to be checked.

You may think you could just not use those tags to avoid detection, but if you have to go out of your way to HIDE yourself from potential consequences, like a criminal on the run, there's a good chance you shouldn't have done it to begin with!

Why is my stuff equivalent to "shovelware"?

A. Newgrounds prides itself on its creators putting in the work to create something amazing, whether it be for animations, games, music, or art. Again, all you did was pose a few existing character models and change the lighting, maybe you used a modelling template, which should never take more than 1 day. 2 days tops! You're not trying to be artistic, you just want to finish as many as you can to please a small crowd of paying Patreon supporters, and even if you are trying to be artistic, it clearly doesn't look like it.

Meanwhile, some works can take 3 days or even weeks to finish (especially if you're not working on it full-time or do other projects). And you're the one questioning if it's "shovelware". This attitude also exists with AI art (also prohibited), ie. the "AI bros" who think they're better then everyone and think their AI technology will triumph over human art.

What counts as a scene creator or third party assets?

A. Scene creators, as per the Art Guidelines, are defined as "Any software where you arrange pre-made assets"

In other words, they don't let you do the same things as "real" 3D programs (eg. Blender), like modelling, texturing, lighting, rigging, animating, etc. all from scratch.

NG has a list of programs you could use to create art, Multiple 3D programs are listed (including Blender, one of the most popular, as well as Maya and 3D Studio Max). Any other 3D program should be comparable to any of them.

Although they are fully-fledged professional programs, and not scene creators, they can still be used to create the same 3rd party crap, simply by downloading and importing already existing .blend or similar files, To mitigate this, there's this rule:

"Any 3D assets not modeled by the uploader should not be primary elements of your piece and should be credited and linked to when possible, to help us determine if the submission is suitably original / transformative."

Meanwhile, here are some programs largely considered as scene creators or commonly used alongside 3rd party assets:

  • Koikatsu Party (Not allowed, period. here ya go!),
  • CharaStudio (A feature in Koikatsu. Characters made with this could be classed as 3rd-party assets, so not allowed)
  • Gacha Life (Not allowed, though it's 2D not 3D.)
  • SFM (Works mostly with third party models, use only if you've created the models yourself, contact Tom if it's still removed)
  • GMod (same as SFM)
  • Honey Select (A NSFW sex sim, Similar to SFM, so don't use it for still-frame renders)
  • Unreal's MetaHuman (Not allowed, the software creates human models)
  • Daz3D (Not allowed, largely consists of 3rd party assets)
  • Video game screenshots, ie. machinima, or anything with a level editor (Not allowed)

If you have more questions, or opinions, feel free to add them here in the comments.

Big news: A+B is hosting a music collab in the NGAP Collab Center.

Introducing: A Sine of Relief (aka the Sine Wave Collab)

Basically, the whole theme is sinewaves. They should sound like this, only you can use them in different pitches (or with subtle tone differences):

MAIN GUIDELINES:

1- Main rule: The majority of the song should largely consist of sine waves. Keep all other instruments to a minimum

(some drums or harsher-toned instruments for example, can be used as a balance, or you could use nothing else)

Furthermore, the sines themselves can be modified in subtle ways (ie. pitch reverb, distortion, filters, etc.),

2- Your song can otherwise be in any genre. Soft classical compositions, fast-paced techno, you name it!

3- I want to keep it E-rated, so avoid explicit language/words.

4- Samples, synthesisers, VSTs, trackers, DAWs, Beepbox, etc. if it supports sine waves, you can use it.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Submission length: 1-8 minutes
  • You can make as many submissions as you want, provided they all total 8 minutes maximum.
  • Submit a WAV, FLAC or other high quality audio format (as long as it's not crispy potato fries). Share the file or a private download link in either my DMS of in the Discord.
  • Deadline: May 1st

RELEASE GUIDELINES:

You can publicly release your submission on Newgrounds provided you:

  • Wait until the collab releases, or sometime around the deadline. Let me know beforehand. Any earlier and you may need official confirmation.
  • Link to either the NGAP Collab Center or if applicable, the finished collab on NG (optional).

Hi.

If you're reading this, you're probably asking to yourself.. Who the hell is "Jim Melon"?

Who is Jim Melon

"Jim Melon" is the name used by several hacked accounts in the past week. They can be identified with a melon wearing sunglasses.

They all say something along the lines of "WE ARE THE JIM MELON LEGION" and "TOM FULP IS MY BITCH" or something like that. They also frequently use penises to annoy the NG userbase.

Contrary to the name, this is not an actual crew, akin to the Duck Division, as they don't really make submissions themselves. It could also just be one person.

Jim Melon Legion "members"

Several recognizable accounts were hacked, including some you may have heard of: These include:

-Falconer02: Creator of Minecraft: TNA: Deleted, restored 12/29/23 11PM EST.

-Blordow: Popular animator from the 2010s, created the Salty Swamp series and his involvment with Jerma985. Briefly deleted, but now mostly restored (pfp, banner, some blogs, some movies are lost).

-lockebelmonte: Fairly known artist from 2009 to 2018. Remained deleted for the longest ouf of this list. Had entire catalog fileswapped and later deleted.

-chibixi: Briefly deleted, now seemingly fixed

-RebelRager: Seemingly resolved without getting deleted

-Choko17: NSFW Artist last active in 2015. Seems to be fixed:

-FuturecopLGF: Guy who makes those "Best Games of the Month" videos. Renamed to "JimMelonLegion" and commented on this post. Lost several games and submissions for a few days.

-princessninjato: Game dev. Had 5 Art submissions hacked and removed.

This will be updated as soon as new information comes along. If you're on this list, please update your password and add 2-factor authentic

What to do now?

  1. Reminder to use TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION and take every reasonable measure to keep your account safe. I was lucky enough to have done that months ago, so apologies if I scared you.
  2. Update your password,
  3. Report any hacked accounts to @TomFulp or other moderators via PM. Flag any hacked submissions or photos of penises.
  4. Anything after those three aren't really that important. Maybe watch some YouTube
