CrimsonKero's News

Posted by CrimsonKero - 1 day ago

It's done. The most recent A+B album has been finished.

Unfortunately, I didn't get lyrics recorded for Parasocial, so I'll leave it at that.

Otherwise, it's a full 30 tracks, 10 for each side, about as long as a feature-length movie.

Download each "disc".

SIDE A: Crimes Against Dipthong:

A story of pain, corruption, a psychic order of orange-hooded wizards, and an evil dropout masking his true intentions.

SIDE B: Divine Tragedy:

A tale of adventure laced with confusion and illusion.

Side 3: Partners in Brine:

A more traditional A+B-styled album, themed around restoration and redemption.

I also did quick visualizers if you want to hear them on YouTube | Side A | Side B | Side 3

Or you can download the whole lot here: All 30 tracks, MP3, at once: ZIP

The first track is live on NG.

As for Newgrounds, 1 new track from the album will be posted every day until they're all posted here.

This doesn't include already-published tracks, such as these ones.

You can check the playlist for updates.

Which track / album side do you like best?

No I do not. They taste disgusting, it's all white and flaky inside, and sometimes they're slimy. I only touch them with caution, if ever.

For anyone not in the forums, I'm now female (barely), still in the early stages of transitioning (shit's been super slow due to the hot summer heat).

I don't usually complain about my personal shit online, but one thing really sucks;

One day I try to get as close as I can get to presenting feminine (clothes, hair, etc.), then my facial hair grows back after only a few days after shaving, ruining the whole thing. Back to square one. :(

I either risk nicking my upper lip, or I go the rest of the week as a guy.

iu_1361996_8157415.webpThat's right, we're animating the legendary sprite series to the core!

Since the Trilogy (parts 1-3) did so well, we are hosting the final part this year:

Scenes open up March 10th

If you're an animator and you want to join, you can wishlist your scene before that date.

This does not guarantee you the scene, but it does make assigning scenes easier. You will still need to join the Power Star Discord server in order to claim your scenes, discuss with other collaborators, etc.

There are currently 22 scenes up for grabs, a few of them have already been wishlisted.

We're also looking for animators with a wider range of different styles and mediums, not just sprites.

Wishlist here!:

Hey everyone. I've got a lot of important stuff to talk about:

Rebranding:

The frog has croaked. I'm considering changing my username all applicable platforms. This is something I've been wanting to do for months, but I was uncertain on what to actually do.

My new username will either be Crimson-CS, CrimsonKero, or just Crimson (unlikely given the account's already taken), but I cannot decide which one to choose.

As a sidenote, I will still retain "Anonymous Frog" as a character, a series I may or may not bring back from the dead, and as part of my A+B music project, but it does not reflect my core identity anymore.

I may also need to move that name, as well as multiple projects, to another account.

I'd like your thoughts on the matter.

Current Near-Complete Projects:

I have three major projects that are almost complete and I'd like to get finished very soon.

Power Star Reanimated (the trilogy, the definititve edition):

This collab aims to recreate the original Power Star flashes by Daniel Sun, from the ground up, with over a dozen animators, re-recorded voice lines, and an original soundtrack composed by both me and @SnVplayer, to replace all the copyrighted ones we can't post here anymore.

I posted both my 2024 scenes to Newgrounds

(thanks for the daily 5th)

The full collab should be released by @Fyar on Newgrounds and YouTube. The soundtrack, as well as a collection of unfinished scenes, will also be posted to YouTube.

Beep Block Bunch

An audio collab that I hosted during the last months of 2024. It has been pushed back to February, should be out in a few days after I finish an animated banner for it.

BTW, that bird comes from an animation I did in 2022. I like simple blobby things, especially those about as simple to draw as Kirby.

Dipthong 3.

A 30 track album that's almost complete, but two tracks are giving me a lot of trouble and this forced me to miss yet another deadline.

Although I completed the instrumental to Parasocial early in production, I haven't been able to write any lyrics for it. OverParty, to a lesser extent, has this same issue.

Currently aiming for a February 2025 release, which I will get to after I finish Beep Block Bunch.

Bigger Upcoming Projects

My full plans for 2025 and the coming years are to get two original IPs off the ground.

Comic

I'm making a one-shot comic so I can submit it to @DannyGoodShirt's NG Jump contest. This will be my most immediate project moving forward.

If I can't make the April 1st deadline, I will consider expanding the comic past 15 pages.

Project Mystopia

I'm making a video game.

I've had plans for a big sci-fi video game as far back to 2021, even composing a theme song for it, but I didn't get much done aside from music and graphic assets, and even those are flimsy, so I have nothing to show for it.

But as of now, I've officially rebooted Project Mystopia. So far, I can't say much about it now but I will update you in the future (as in, after April, after I finish the comic).

That's all.

Another day, another month. time to vote again.

Movies

Not much to say. Ultimately this month will end up biased towards Halloween movies, so it's expected they'll show up.

I did try to include a few non-Halloween entries.

iu_1300013_8157415.webp

Games

Usually this is not my strongest suit. I try to vote for stuff that a. have the most effort put into them, and b. innovative and seem fun to play, but unfortunately, I don't have the time to play more than 10 games, vs. 10 movies, because a lot of tend to be

Nonetheless, I still try to "guess" in order to fill up all ten slots. IDK if voting fewer games would make my overall vote stronger or weaker.

Reincarnation would've gotten higher if it weren't a redo of an existing 2008 game.

Other Stuff:

Mostly audio related. I've got nothing animation, or art-wise.

Beep Block Bunch (Collab)

I'm hosting another audio collab. This time, it's to make set to the beeping rhythm used in the Beep Block levels from the Super Mario series.

Previously, I've hosted the "A Sine of Relief" collab, where the theme is to sine waves as the majority of your instruments. That turned out well, so why not host another.

See NGAP Collab Center Discord for more details and to join in.

Submissions due December 1st.

Dipthong 3

Previous post: https://anonymous-frog.newgrounds.com/news/post/1464544

I originally said I'd release Dipthong 3 on September 18th. this is entirely my fault. It's been delayed to this month (and hopefully not again)

As of writing, it's nearly complete. The cover art's done (all 3 'discs'), all 30 songs are laid out and composed. Two tracks (OverParty and Parasocial) need vocals, which I plan to add with Speakonia (weird experiment), and some mixing fixing, but that's about it. Hopefully it'll all be done by Halloween.

Takeover Tuesday

I'll end this post with my thoughts on Takeover Tuesday.

First: Thank you @RedMongoose for featuring the track "Damp Thicks", currently only the 2nd worst track with the word "thick" thanks to YouTuber KSI.

Second: I haven't noticed that much of a difference in view count. I checked Damp Thicks for reference.

There's a recent breach at the Internet Archive, this means no Wayback Machine, and NG also doesn't have view analytics, unlike YouTube or Bandcamp. With these factors out of the question, I can't gauge how well it did during the event. But given it only has 156 listens as of today, I doubt it gained that much.

If your work is featured this way, don't expect hundreds or thousands of views, unlike a regular frontpage. When 843 people put up a submission for a whole day, the whole thing thins out. If 8,430 people join in this Tuesday and they all view one submission, each one will only get 10 views if they were all evenly spread out.

Third: If you are looking for submissions post-Takeover, searching the archive trying to find DT (or any other specific thing) is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, and it didn't show up until after I scrolled past 100+ submissions.

When searching purely for audio, it's easier to search, but most people will just use the default page.

Fourth: I've seen plenty of people try to self-promote their own stuff, even if they didn't really need it. some people really don't need it. You can say you want "maximise freedom", but it's best if you just disallowed it outright. It's annoying, it ruins the experience.

Fifth: Surprisingly, there weren't that many A-rated submissions, only 27 in total. Out of 800+. I expected more, but this is a good step.

Final thoughts: I think the event is good, but too chaotic and oversaturated to be worth it, the returns are too minimal to be meaningful to anyone who gets featured this way. By replacing the normal front page, it becomes a massive interruption. It tries to bring a form of scouting to the entire site, but it just feels like feature creep.

For featurers, it can be fun, and maybe that's all that matters, but for recipients, self-promo or otherwise, at the current moment, you won't get much out of having your submission featured.

It's still a neat way to get people to pay money to Newgrounds, but it's mostly just a novelty.

I think if NG introduced a second tier of Supporter (ie. make it for $8 per month vs the usual $3), it would be an incredible perk. It will reduce the amount of active participants (which should mean more views per submission featured), but in return, people can be more incentivised to pay extra money to NG, both of which a win in my book.

This is a bit of a quick, slightly rushed post, but it was today o' clock when I discovered that Monthly awards have been added to Newgrounds, and I felt that would be something big to talk about.

So a bit of history: The Monthly voting system was introduced in early 2005, they kept all the data and were able to retroactively add it to old monthly winners.

Examples:

What this means:

1- Monthly voting has spread to Audio, so it will also get the award, most likely.

However, Weekly trophies are hidden and currently only visible through an RSS feed or the author's Trophy page, so we might need that updated. (Tom? hello?)

2- The Art Portal also has monthly voting, so they'll probably be getting the award again. Monthlies were already on the Art Portal for a few months, so they're nothing new. I see it as a grand return that's more than welcome, even if it is partially curated due to the way monthly voting works (more on that in my last post).

3- The upper ceiling for awards is now 4 per movie/game.

This means the fabled Triple Crown is no more. Introducing the QUADRUPLE CROWN, aka.

Daily Feature, Weekly User's Choice, Review Crew Pick, Best of the Month.

4- Talented, well-deserved authors (mainly bigshots like SrPelo, Zeurel, JoelG, MarcoCardenas, and such) gain a slight boost on their trophy count, edging them just a bit higher and away from the low-effort hacks who could only go up to Daily.

5- If you've opted out of awards, yet still got voted in, you still win the award (eg. some of SrPelo's stuff).

IDK if the "Opt out of awards" function currently works for monthly voting, or if I'd have to contact Tom or co to remove it from the nominee list.

6- A possible suggestion: Make it so you can click the date on the monthly trophy and it'll redirect you to the "Best of [year]" thread that it was posted on.

I will close this post off with a Wikigrounds article I've written for the updated award.

This post documents the new updated Monthly Voting tab, my thoughts on the whole thing, and the submissions that got my vote.

The first change I've noticed: there's an easy to understand and insightful description about the nominees and its suggested criteria, updated from the original version.

Safe for Work (formerly "Not pornographic")

Independent (formerly "Not commercial")

Contains Artistry (seems new, yet somehow 2 Pebbles movies are on there).

Honestly, those criteria should be more than just be a suggestion.

iu_1265615_8157415.png

Rather than each submission be arranged as a grid, it puts them all in a list. First,

-it puts all pinned submissions on top, if any.

-then all submissions I've favourited

-then stuff voted highly on,

-then those from authors I follow

-then the other eligible submissions

Arranging the familiar, already seen, already liked submissions on top, gives some familiarity with whatever picks I've selected, but at the same time, if you haven't watched that many submissions, it can make it seem biased, especially if you missed a few technically superior selections.

Ideally, the voter should aim to watch them after the fact, so my suggestion: if you vote for something you haven't watched, it will notify you to watch it, but will still let you vote anyway.

After you pick 10 or less submissions, you are then redirected to another page to sort them. I think it'd be nicer to sort them on the same page, for convenience.

iu_1265613_8157415.webp

Movies:

These are my picks: Since these are from August, of course the first 6 are Clock stuff.

iu_1265614_8157415.webp

One neat thing I like is that the voted submissions are highlighted in their Portal's colour

(movies = red, games = blue, audio = green, art = purple)

Games

Mostly identical, only there's a smaller pool of eligible submissions, and less stuff I've actually played or looked at prior to voting. The main issue is that games take longer to load and are longer to get into, compared to the other submissions, so overall... it's longer.

I know Bastard Aliens has a dick in the intro cutscene, but that's a joke penis. For comedic effect, For pissing. Different vibes.

Speaking of: that game is played through typing, like inMario Teaches Typing, so that alone makes it worth it.

Also, clocks before rocks!

iu_1265616_8157415.webp

Audio

If I could recommend a new criteria, it'd be "make sure it's not that overdone, overrated techno-dubstep EDM bullshit from those DJ-Geometry Dashheads."

I wanted to highlight a selection of new, unique from other genres-type bangers. Give at least one of these guys a follow.

iu_1265617_8157415.webp

There was also a piece of official Among Us music from Puff himself, that one I deliberately didn't vote for to highlight the other artists.

Art

Same as Audio, it's great that Newgrounds is actually allowing them into the contest, but at the same time, I don't know what is considered eligible for voting in this category, and that's a big concern for me. There seems to be about 60 submissions on this list, which is lower than what's currently frontpaged. WAY lower.

There was this whole discussion in the Suggestions to Tom thread about this whole ordeal. At one point, 84 submissions were frontpaged in a single day, which was more than what the site could handle.

Even if only 10 submissions are FP'd per day, that's still ~300 submissions, or in other words, more than two thirds of all submissions featured on this site didn't make the cut.

I've come up with a few case studies.

CASE 1: Multiple works by the same author

One of the most prolific artists here, BridgeofFaust, had 13 submissions on the month of August, every single one of them frontpaged. Only two of them made it on here (I "voted highly" to highlight them in the same screenshot)

iu_1265618_8157415.png

In fact, none of the submitters had more than two entries.

CASE 2: Late-FP'd Submissions

This piece by @Veloxscene isn't featured in the voting list. It was released in April, but featured in August.

It's a little rough, but it was on the front page.

This is also a late submission, though the author does a lot of NSFW art as well.

This piece was only one day off, released July 31st.

CASE 3: Miku

Only 5 eligible submissions feature Hatsune Miku, or her regional variants, despite there being a big boom in Miku fanart.

Some neat variants that didn't make it.

CASE 4: Other Ommissions

@KokoroHatsaru did the 30 Day Summergrounds Showdown. Unlike other prolific authors like Faust, violxiv, and such, none of her stuff made the cut.

Although some of them weren't put on the front page, a lot of them (including these ones) did. I wonder why they weren't eligible.

I really like this animated loop, but alas, it didn't make the cut either. This author had 4 submissions frontpaged and none are up here.

Both of these works from a newcomer aren't on here, even though they cool has hek!.

There doesn't seem to be a @Lisnovski on the list.

My theory: the submissions are manually curated by Tom/the mods, this is why the monthly voting was delayed by 1 week. Since there's no award system, and score sorting tends to be unviable at this scale, this seems to be the only real explanation.

Most of these ommisions, I can agree. If you allow a whole dozen submissions from the big shot Fausts and Violets out there, there's a chance they'll flood multiple slots at once, so I can see why they limited them to just two.

Some of these are just people participating in a trend or doing portraits of popular characters, so presumably only the best of those kind are selected.

Some are just not as polished, but still, it's ~70% of all FP'd art, a chance is a chance.

Anyway: these are my picks. Once again, women and children second, clocks first.

iu_1265619_8157415.webp

Other Things to Note

While writing this post, I clicked off and on the voting page multiple times and it seemed to save my progress. It also automatically considers my picks a full vote without locking in, regardless of whether I did the full 10 or not.

Interesting to note.

Another suggestion: A tick to indicate whether a submission is "original material" or a parody/fanart/etc.. Even though I can tell already by looking at it, it makes it easier to notice in a massive list.

Anyway: Happy voting!
